Image galleries are one of the most popular page types on the internet. Done well, gallery pages load (fairly) quickly, provide the visitor an easy and straightforward approach to find and view thumbnails, and, display the larger images in a pleasing way. But, gallery pages can also be done very poorly. On some pages, the "thumbnail" is actually displaying the "larger" image in a physically smaller area, causing the entire page to take a long time to load. Depending upon the content of the images, the thumbnails can be too small or unnecessarily large. One of the most annoying layouts involves the use of frames where the frame used to display the larger image is too small, resulting in horizontal and/or vertical scrollbars.

We have provided links to some pages that show various layout styles of image galleries. Notes with each link provide issues for you to watch for on that page. As far as design features and implementation shown in these sample pages, we would recommend Page 6 and then Page 4 because of the layout of the thumbnails and the larger images displayed in new windows.

Page 1
  • displayed with tables
  • clicking a thumbnail displays the larger image in the same browser window (click the browser's <Back> button to return to the thumbnail gallery)
  • if browser window is smaller than 800 x 600, still displays OK
Page 2
  • displayed with tables
  • similar to Page 1 except the thumbnails are centered on the page
  • if browser window is smaller than 800 x 600, still displays OK
Page 3
  • displayed with tables
  • similar to Page 2 except the thumbnails are separated by a fixed spacing even as the browser window is resized
  • if browser window is smaller than 800 x 600, still displays OK
Page 4
  • displayed with tables
  • similar to Page 3 except that the larger images are displayed in a new browser window
  • if browser window is smaller than 800 x 600, still displays OK
Page 5
  • displayed with frames (click here if your browser doesn't support frames)
  • thumbnails are displayed vertically on the left in a scrolling list
  • larger images are displayed in a frame on the right, but, are large enough to cause horizontal and vertical scrollbars
  • if browser window is smaller than 800 x 600, displays only so-so
Page 6
  • displayed with frames (click here if your browser doesn't support frames)
  • thumbnails are displayed in a frame on the right
  • the larger images are displayed in a streamlined new browser window
  • as the browser window is resized, the thumbnails move up and down so that a horizontal scrollbar is not needed
  • if browser window is smaller than 800 x 600, still displays fine
