This is our version of the classic tawse. It's
famous in the past for disciplinary use in schools
in the United Kingdom.
Traditionally the tawse measured 21" to
24"
in length, 1½" in width, and,
had either 2 or 3 tails. They were also
about ¼" thick, and, we accomplish
that thickness by cementing together 2 pieces
of our black latigo leather. Of course,
we finish the tawse with our edge treatment.
Even with the extra thickness, this nasty implement
is pretty "floppy". There
are stories that some male teachers carried the
tawse
over their shoulder and under their dress jacket. The weight
and length provide a thud that also stings, and,
be careful of inevitable "wrap around". In
keeping with tradition, the handle has a large
hole for hanging the tawse on a hook or nail.
